The Afterpast Review

A Feminist Magazine

Your Future by Leila (Virginia, 13)

9/8/2023

She was a lady
With long hair that went down to her hips
No hair ties or bandanas
Just silky smooth hair that was like a scarf in the wind
Music was her faith
She wore pitch black headphones
Canceling out sounds with no purpose
No attention paid to the world around her
She softly skipped, bobbing her head to 80’s rock
She was a lady who danced to work
Adorned with high top shoes and a leather jacket
Her eyes were brown but you could see her soul in the sunlight
Happiness craved her
Her pockets empty but her heart full
Love was her muse
Passion was her goal
She was an unstoppable lady

She was a lady
She buttoned her collared shirt, slipped on her suit, buckled her pants
A women of challenges
A chain of gold
Her eyes like a cats
Beady, glaring
A stubborn lady
Who knew what she wanted
Her surface didn’t show emotion, but behind the screen there was compassion
She grew up with nothing and gained everything
Through thick and thin she learned to love
Happiness craved her
Hard work paid her
She was an unstoppable lady

She was a long-haired lady
Still trying to make up for lost years
Beating herself up on what she could’ve done

But she stopped looking back and set off on a journey for pleasure.

She was a lady
She felt hopeless and stuck
In a locked box with the key thrown away

Yet the key was at her feet the whole time and she just had to unlock the door.
Challenges occur but you can't let it stop you
Your life is waiting
Take action
Like the ladies who thought they would fall but climbed to the top of the mountain.

Leila is a 13 year old student who is trying to expand on her writing skills. Entering poetry submissions seemed like a perfect place to improve with the help of other writers! She was just recently published on Spark to Flames first issue and she's so excited to explore more writing styles and pieces!
