The Afterpast Review

A Feminist Magazine

a letter to mama by Chiara Polimeni (Italy, 28)

1/31/2024

the minute I was born, you apart were torn
yourself you left behind, your teeth you had to grind
the walls of your world you clicked, and as I my eyes blinked
the colours of your prison you picked
I’m sorry you had to wipe my tears
even when you had your own fears
and when no one your hand held
‘cause you were just a woman
         -          and it was written in the stars that had to live in hell

Chiara Polimeni is a Southern-Italian translator and language teacher. She believes in the power of the universe, magic and coffee. She still longingly thinks of her Tumblr blog from the 2010s. She writes because she's too lazy to speak.
